Provincial police say a 59-year-old woman died Friday after falling through ice while walking her dog in Prince Edward County.

In a news release, the Ontario Provincial Police said the woman was reported missing Friday afternoon.

Residents reported that she was seen walking her dog on ice near County Road 20, which runs along the South Shore adjacent to the St. Lawrence River.

After an initial search, the woman was found in the water. The dog has not been found.

Police have repeated warnings that ice conditions remain uncertain and potentially dangerous, despite recent cold snaps.

“Temperatures have been erratic this winter and much of the ice is not thick enough to support people safely,” police said.
