Alec Baldwin returns his phone amid shooting investigation

Alec Baldwin turned over his cellphone to authorities as part of the investigation into a fatal shooting on a New Mexico film set last fall, a law enforcement official said.

Anta Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Juan Rios said Baldwin’s phone was turned over Friday to law enforcement in Suffolk County, New York, who will collect the phone’s information. and will provide them to Santa Fe County investigators, the Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

Sheriff’s Office investigators in December obtained a search warrant for the contents of the phone as part of their investigation into the Oct. 11 shooting at the Rust film set at Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

Baldwin was an actor and co-producer, and the search warrant on his phone was for text messages, pictures, videos, calls, or any other information related to the film.

Alec voluntarily provided his phone to authorities this morning so they could complete their investigationBaldwin’s attorney, Aaron Dyer

Authorities said Baldwin’s prop revolver fired live ammunition during a rehearsal, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Baldwin’s attorney, Aaron Dyer, said his client had been cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation and the delay in providing information over the phone was no indication otherwise.

“Alec voluntarily provided his phone to authorities this morning so they could complete their investigation,” Dyer said in a statement Friday.

“But this case is not about his phone, and there is no answer on his phone.”

Baldwin, who has denied any wrongdoing in the shooting, said in an Instagram post on January 8 that New Mexico had to go through New York law enforcement and the process of specifying exactly what was necessary took time.

“They can’t just go through your phone and take your pictures, or your love letters to your wife, or whatever,” he said.

Baldwin said he was unaware the gun he was holding contained live ammunition when it exploded. Investigators are trying to find the source of the live bullet.
