Auston Matthews out of Maple Leafs training after testing positive for COVID

Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews tested positive for COVID, coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed Monday afternoon.

ā€œNo symptoms, but both tested positive in a rapid test this morning,ā€ Keefe said, also referring to assistant coach Dean Chynoweth.

The team is awaiting the results of Matthews’ PCR test on Tuesday.

Prior to Matthews, the Leafs had 15 players on the COVID health and safety protocol roster, and all have returned except for defenseman Timothy Liljegren.

The Leafs were training after a day off Sunday.

With Matthews out of the way, Keefe moved John Tavares to Matthews’ place on the front row, between Mitch Marner and Michael Bunting.

Alex Kerfoot crossed the second row – taking Tavares’ normal place – between William Nylander and Ilya Mikheyev.

Toronto is scheduled to host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

McDavid was not in the Oilers’ morning practice Monday at Madison Square Garden ahead of their game against the New York Rangers.

Oilers coach Dave Tippett said McDavid was “resting”.
