Authorities say a mass shooting that killed 10 people in a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, was a racially motivated hate crime.

Police confirm that 10 people are dead and the 18-year-old shooter is in custody. 4 of the victims were store employees.

The shooting at the Tops supermarket at 1275 Jefferson Avenue was broadcast live on Twitch.com. Video shows him shooting a woman in the head shortly after getting out of his car in the parking lot, around 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police say the gunman shot three people outside the supermarket. He was dressed in camouflage and wore a bulletproof vest. He was carrying a semi-automatic rifle.

The word N is written on the barrel of the gun in a screenshot from the video. He opened fire inside the store, shooting down shoppers as they tried to flee.

Officials say a retired Buffalo police officer who worked as a security guard shot the shooter, but his body armor stopped the bullet. The suspect then shot and killed the security guard.

When he walked out of the store to surrender to the police after the carnage, he first put one of the guns to his chin and then dropped it.

Video shows officers taking the shooter into custody while a person lay on the ground nearby.

A 106-page manifesto allegedly written by the suspect and posted online raged against white people becoming the minority in America.

If there’s one thing I want you to take away from these writings, it’s that white birth rates must change,” he wrote. “Every day the white population is getting smaller.”
