Cruz: After Uvalde shooting, law enforcement didn’t tell Texas leaders the truth

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz told CBS 11 on Friday that law enforcement in Uvalde failed to tell him and other Texas leaders the truth about how they responded to the deadly shooting that claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers.

“They didn’t tell us the truth the day after the shooting,” Cruz said. “In fact, almost everything they described turned out to be wrong.”

When asked if law enforcement officers lied to him, Cruz replied, “I was sitting at the table, sitting there with Greg Abbott and John Cornyn and everything they said about that day turned out to be wrong.”

Senator Cruz made his comments during an interview while attending the Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.

He also criticized the law enforcement response to the shooting himself.

There were 376 law enforcement officers responding to Robb Elementary School, but they waited over an hour before pursuing and killing the shooter.

The US Department of Justice is among those investigating the response.

Cruz said, “This is completely unacceptable, there is no good explanation for law enforcement.”

Since the May 24 shooting, the families of the victims in Uvalde have demanded that the whole truth come out.

When asked what he would do to make sure this happens, Cruz said, “I will continue to press for fair and objective investigations at the state and federal level, both are ongoing. It is important to look back and learn from the mistakes of law enforcement’s response to Uvalde.”

Cruz addressed the Conservatives at CPAC and urged them to vote in November.

“If you look at what’s going on with Washington, everything is bad,” Cruz said. “We have uncontrollable inflation; everything is exploding.”

Earlier this week, voters in Kansas, a Republican state, rejected a measure that would have removed abortion protections from the state constitution.

The vote came more than a month after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

On August 25, the new Texas law that bans most abortions goes into effect.

There are exceptions to save the mother’s life.

Jasmine Crockett, the Democratic nominee to succeed Congressman Eddie Bernice Johnson in the 30th congressional district, said at a news conference Friday that she hopes Kansas’ vote resonates here in Texas in November.

“I hope Texas will do the exact same thing and surprise the world by pushing our governor back because our governor was one of the people who paved the way,” Crockett said. “Look, I believe what’s going to happen in November, I think we’re going to see not just a red wave, but a tidal wave.”

He cited the economy and the situation on the southern border as reasons Republicans won three congressional seats in the Rio Grande Valley.

Dallas-area Democrats held a press conference Friday morning where they said extremism was on display at CPAC.

The Democrats condemned Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whom they describe as authoritarian and who recently complained that Europe was becoming “mixed race”.

Orban was welcomed as a speaker at CPAC on Thursday.

Congressman Colin Allred, D-Richardson, said at the press conference, “I condemn his presence in Dallas. I condemn his presence in the United States and I try to spread his authoritarian ideology in this country.”

State Rep. Rhetta Bowers, D-Garland, said, “Republicans are presenting one of the most grotesque displays of far-right ideology we’ve ever seen in Texas.”

In response to the question of whether there were extremist views at CPAC, Senator Cruz said, “Joe Biden’s top priority is to pass Bernie Sanders’ socialist budget, you look at the Democratic Party, the Democrats used to say they were for border security. Today they are for open borders.”

In addition to Cruz, a number of other Texas Republican leaders Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Col. Governor Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Former President Donald Trump will be the main attraction when he addresses thousands of conservatives on Saturday afternoon.
