A woman died and a man was hospitalized in serious condition Monday morning after the SUV they were in collided with a truck and plunged into the Lachine Canal in the borough of LaSalle.

Montreal Police said the incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the SUV, heading east on St-Patrick Street, collided with a truck heading north on the avenue Dollard. The impact caused the SUV to slide off the road and plunge across the frozen surface. from the Lachine Canal.

Montreal firefighters were called to the scene and were able to extract the driver and passenger, both 70, from the SUV. The passenger was declared dead on the spot. The driver was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
