Don’t know how to hide yourself from Omicron? Here’s a guide – Winnipeg

As COVID-19 continues to evolve, so does masking.

To alleviate any confusion that might arise around masks when circulating the Omicron variant, here’s an overview of the different types available, how to use them correctly, and where to find them.

Homemade cloth mask:

  • Ineffective if worn in a single layer.
  • If nothing else is available, Health Canada recommends wearing them in two layers of tightly woven fabric with a filter between them.
  • Make sure the mask is snug.
  • Wash your hands before and after putting on, putting on and taking off the mask.
  • Store in a clean paper or cloth bag between uses.
  • Wash with soapy water after each use.
  • Discard the filter layer after each use.
  • Available commercially.

Medical mask:

  • Quite effective on its own, but the spaces on the side of the mask do not provide the best seal.
  • It is best worn with a cloth mask over it for the perfect fit.
  • Wash your hands before and after putting on, putting on and taking off the mask.
  • Store in a clean paper or cloth bag between uses.
  • Usually single use, but can be reused until visibly damaged, dirty or wet.
  • Available commercially.

KN95 mask:

  • Efficient due to the adjustment and filtering capabilities.
  • Very similar to the N95 respirator; the main difference between the two is the manufacturer.
  • Wash your hands before and after putting on, putting on and taking off the mask.
  • Store in a clean paper or cloth bag between uses.
  • Can be reused until visibly damaged, dirty or wet.
  • For now, hard to find in Winnipeg.
