A man from London has been identified as the victim of a fatal New Year’s Day shooting in Sparta.

The OPP responded at around 7 p.m. Saturday to a shooting at a North Street home in the community of Elgin County, southeast of St. Thomas.

A man was taken to hospital and pronounced dead, police said.

The deceased was identified on Monday as Christopher Robert Roy, 36, of London.

Devon Vandenriessche, 36, of Central Elgin, is charged with second degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in St. Thomas court Friday.

Police closed part of North Street on Monday. The investigation focused on 46293 North St., where a wooden sign on the front reads “Bob and Sandi Vandenriessche”.

Investigators have asked anyone with information about the shooting – the first homicide of the year in southwestern Ontario – to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Fail crime at 1-800-222-8477.
