Fans stormed the pitch after Saint-Etienne were relegated to Ligue 2 after losing on penalties to Auxerre in the play-off on Sunday.
The two sides were tied 2-2 on aggregate after a 1-1 second leg draw at St-Etienne’s Gauvreux Gichard, before Auxerre won 5-4 on penalties.
Algerian midfielder Riad Boudebouz was the only one to miss a Saint-Etienne penalty.

French media reported that police used tear gas canisters to disperse supporters, while players returned to the dressing rooms after some fans stormed the pitch and launched fireworks from the stands .
Saint-Etienne were forced to play without their fans earlier this month after fireworks ignited in the stands during their 4-1 home loss to Monaco in April, disrupting play for almost ‘a half hour.
Auxerre will replace Saint-Etienne in the first division, accompanied by Toulouse and Ajaccio, while Metz and Bordeaux are also relegated to the second division.
