Floyd Mayweather protege Gervonta Davis ‘almost killed a man’ against Rolly Romero, knockout punch, reaction

Floyd Mayweather’s protege Gervonta Davis delivered a punch out of nowhere that sent shockwaves through the boxing world.

Gervonta Davis showed why he is one of boxing’s greatest assets after ending Rolando Romero with an insane knockout in the sixth round of their WBA lightweight title fight.

Davis brought the belt into the fight but faced a nasty lead as trash talk and bad blood dominated the lead.

The protege of boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, Davis had to deal with some big punches from Romero that left a nasty mark on his left temple in the first round.

But Davis took his time and held his gun with his left hand until round six when he unleashed the perfect left.

After dodging a right from Romero, Davis landed a left straight right on the button and knocked out his rival.

Romero’s legs left him immediately and the only thing that saved him from falling from the ring were the ropes.

Romero got up but was incredibly shaky and the referee had no choice but to end the fight in the sixth round.

There was clearly bad blood between the two men as Davis immediately ran towards Romero and his team and taunted him but was dragged away, while the challenger left the ring before the official results were announced.

In front of a vocal, pro-Davis crowd, the champion was grateful after the win.

“I want to thank baby from New York,” Davis said after the fight. “I won my first belt here, it was great to come back to New York and do it again.

“As much as I wanted to be cocky, I wanted to thank Rolly, I want to thank his team, he settled it like a man inside the ring and I wish him the best for the future.”

Davis said Romero landed a shot early but knew he could wait for the shot.

And even scarier, Davis said the kick wasn’t a free kick.

“What’s crazy is I didn’t even throw that hard, I just ran through him, he just ran into him,” Davis said.

But while Davis didn’t swing from the fences, the impact of the shot was widely felt as the boxing world stood up and took notice.

Former Australian world title challenger Billy Dib tweeted: “Tank by far the best LIGHTWEIGHT in the world. Scary.”

Former boxer Ishé Smith wrote: “I knocked out his asshole, best I’ve seen Tank. Patient and calm, good shit”.

ESPN’s Myron Medcalf wrote: “Romero gave it his all. Fought bravely. But all it takes is one punch to Tank Davis to change everything. Now stop messing around and install Haney, Loma and the other big talents at 135/140 and give the fans what they deserve.

ESPN’s Sid Ventura added, “Wow, Tank Davis with a one-punch TKO out of nowhere.”

Fox’s Morgan Adsit said: “Tank Davis remains undefeated and a champion, just KO’d Rolando Romero with his big left power. I don’t think Romero knows where he is right now.

The lightweight division is on fire right now as the boxing world awaits next week’s clash between Aussie George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney at Marvel Stadium with the chance to become the eighth undisputed champion of the… any division in the era of the four belts.

The likes of Davis, Vasyl Lomachenko and Ryan Garcia are just a few of the names waiting in the wings.
