Former Fijian prime minister will resist Chinese influence

Former Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has pledged to resist China’s influence in the South Pacific if he returns to office this year.

It follows the arrival of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in the capital Suva.

He met with regional leaders to try to get Fiji to sign a new security and trade agreement.

Rabuka ruled out the possibility of China training Fijian military personnel and establishing Chinese military bases on Fijian soil.
