Heartbroken family wonder why truck plunged off Santa Mateo coastal cliff – CBS San Francisco

SAN MATEO COUNTY (KPIX) – Elizabeth Anaya says her brother went out to enjoy an evening barbecue with friends. Hours later, he was killed when the truck he was in mysteriously crossed the Highway 1 intersection, drove through the parking lot at Pescadero State Beach, and rolled down a cliff about 30 feet into the ocean.

A young woman also died in the accident and searchers were still trying to locate a third possible victim in the ocean waters off the beach on Sunday.

“I mean, we were waiting for him at home and we’re just, I don’t know, we’re puzzled,” Anaya told KPIX 5. “He was in that area, he was having a barbecue with some friends.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, the 2012 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound on Pescadero Creek Road at an unknown speed. But they are still trying to figure out why the driver kept heading towards the rocky cliffs of the beach. It was not immediately clear whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

“I don’t think he actually drove on the road,” Anaya said upon seeing the accident on Saturday afternoon. She says the coroner called the family to confirm her brother’s identity.

San Mateo County paramedics first identified Anaya’s brother who had died at the scene around 9:22 p.m., then found a girl inside the truck after the vehicle was recovered from the ocean. Paramedics declared her dead after midnight.

San Mateo County paramedics first identified a deceased man at the scene around 9:22 p.m. Friday, then found a girl inside the truck after the vehicle was recovered from the ocean. Paramedics declared her dead after midnight.

Rob Talbot, a longtime county resident, says this kind of accident has happened several times over the past few decades.

“It’s just sad that it’s still going on and maybe they need to up their game with some extra lights or another front warning sign,” Talbot said. “They just think the road is going and maybe they’re expecting big signals and there aren’t any.”

Talbot pointed out that the stop sign on the east side of State Route 1 at Pescadero Creek Road has a light to flash to drivers at night. But he says it doesn’t work or can’t be a scene right now.

The crash is still under investigation and witnesses are asked to contact Constable Wilkison at (650) 779-7200 if they have any information about the case.

“I came here, just to see what was left,” Anaya said, holding up a shoe she said belonged to her brother. She saw him on the shore hours after the truck was pulled from the scene. “I mean, it’s just hard.”
