How Manchester United should line up vs Norwich in Premier League fixture – Samuel Luckhurst

Manchester United welcome Norwich to Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

United returned from the international break last month with a 1-1 draw against Leicester and they followed that result with a 1-0 defeat to Everton. United’s hopes of securing Champions League football are now almost over.

United face competition for the Europa League places and they need to salvage an ounce of dignity during the remainder of the season with spirited displays. That seems unlikely given this season’s evidence, but United should have enough against Norwich.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka showed why he is no longer a regular at Everton and Diogo Dalot is one of the handful of truly committed United players. Alex Telles uses United as a means to get into the Brazil squad and hardly performs, while Alvaro Fernandez has outgrown Under-23 football.

United are restricted in midfield. Bruno Fernandes will be at the club next season and so will Hannibal Mejbri, so he should get a full debut. The front three might as well stay the same despite an anodyne afternoon at Everton.

Injuries are really starting to bite for United and it won’t be long before youngsters are getting starts, especially if the season is effectively over within the next week. Fernandez and Hannibal should be on the bench today but it’s too early for either to start.

Dalot has to come back in at right-back for Wan-Bissaka in a game United should dominate. The rest of the defense picks itself in Lindelof, Maguire and Telles.

It’s the same story in midfield. Matic is the only holding player still available, so Fernandes and Pogba should play ahead of him in a more attacking team.

Rashford was unfortunate to be taken off at Goodison and deserves another chance from the left, with Sancho and Ronaldo completing the front three.

There will be a temptation to throw the club’s youngsters into this match after the gutless nature of last weekend’s performance, but balance needs to be struck here with fixtures against Liverpool and Arsenal on the horizon.

With Fred and McTominay unavailable, Hannibal deserves to start alongside Matic and Fernandes.

Sancho’s strongest performances have been down the left for United, but perhaps he can move to the opposite flank to allow Rashford a chance to rediscover his form. Although Sancho was poor starting on the right side last weekend, it’s worth another go.

It can’t get much worse than losing to Everton in the manner they did, surely.
