A MAN gave his cousin a £ 5 scratch card for Christmas – and he ended up winning £ 36,000.
He gave the winning “stocking stuffer” scratch card to a family member over the Christmas holidays – but now his wife has demanded that they get every penny back after the “lucky break” victory.
The anonymous man from the United States posted the test on Reddit – claiming his 23-year-old cousin was stunned when he won the minimum jackpot of £ 36,000 ($ 50,000.)
But now his wife has demanded that they retrieve the lucky cousin’s “life-changing” scratch card.
Speaking of the winnings, the man wrote on Reddit, “I took him in a big bear hug and said Merry Christmas, you’re lucky ** hole.
“He was screaming and his mother was in tears and the whole room was excited. It was literally one of the ten best experiences of my life.”
However, the man then received a text from his wife, saying simply “get out to the car”.
He said: “She told me there was no way we were going to give my cousin $ 50,000 and then started to worry about me buying the lotto tickets to start.”
The man displaying the dilemma, who is believed to be in his 40s, said he and his wife were already well off financially.
But for the 23-year-old, winning the jackpot was going to be “life-changing” since he recently graduated from college.
After some thought he said the money “could not have gone to a better member of my family.”
But the victory caused friction between him and his wife – who has “barely” spoken to him since the 23-year-old hit the jackpot.
The man continued, “His mother is single and was one of those fiercely independent women who refused charity.
“She took on additional jobs to help pay for his education. He worked at least two jobs himself while attending school full time and always managed the Dean’s List.
“But he still had to take out loans. He got a job, but he can’t afford a car or live near the office yet, so he is planning a trip of almost two hours.
“He’s also saving up for an engagement ring for his sweet three-year-old girlfriend.
“This money would literally change this kid’s life and frankly I think it couldn’t have gone to a better member of my family.”
Although they explained that they only gave the cousin a £ 5 bill, the woman “wasn’t buying, and she won’t let go”.
The man added: “Now she demands that I go back there and take the ticket back from her, saying maybe we’ll give her some of it.
“We argue a bit, I can’t get her to explain why she wants this money so badly other than ‘it’s ours and you don’t give it’.
After reading the dilemma, Reddit users rushed to make the man feel better about his decision – adding that the woman cannot demand a refund for the ticket.
One person said, “You don’t take gifts back when you realize they’re worth more than you think. “
