Iran threatens revenge for murder of Soleimani if former US President Trump is not tried

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on Monday vowed revenge for the US assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani two years ago, unless former US President Donald Trump stands trial.

“If Trump and [former secretary of state Mike] Pompeo is not tried by a fair court for the criminal act of assassinating General Soleimani, Muslims will take revenge for their martyr, ”Raisi said, according to the official IRNA news agency.

Iran and allied groups in Iraq held vigils in honor of Soleimani, the former commander of the Quds Force, the IRGC’s overseas arm, who was killed in a drone strike in Iraq on January 3, 2020, with Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al Muhandis.

Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations also called on the United Nations Security Council to hold the United States and Israel accountable for Soleimani’s assassination.

“In view of the disastrous consequences of this terrorist act for international peace and security, the Security Council must live up to its Charter-based responsibilities and hold the United States and the Israeli regime accountable for the planning, support and commission of this terrorist act, ”Takht Ravanchi said in his letter to the United Nations Security Council.

At the time of the drone strike that killed Soleimani, the United States justified its actions to the UN as “self-defense” and said it was ready to take any further action “if necessary” to Middle East to protest against American personnel and interests.
