Kevin Spacey charged with criminal sexual assault in UK

Kevin Spacey was charged in the UK with four counts of sexual assault against three men, as well as one count of inciting a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without their consent. The criminal charges against Spacey were announced by Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in a statement on Thursday.

“The CPS has authorized criminal charges against Kevin Spacey, 62, on four counts of sexual assault against three men,” said Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division. “He was also charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without their consent. The charges follow a review of evidence gathered by the [London] Metropolitan Police in its investigation.

The charges stem from two alleged incidents in London in 2005, two more in 2008 and a fifth incident in Gloucestershire in 2013. From 2003 to 2015, Spacey was artistic director of the Old Vic theater in the Lambeth district of London. According to the Metropolitan Police, the alleged victim of the 2005 incident is now in his 40s, while the men involved in the 2008 and 2013 incidents are now in their 30s. In the statement, the CPS reminded “all concerned that the criminal proceedings against Mr. Spacey are active and that he is entitled to a fair trial”. Spacey cannot be formally charged unless he enters England or Wales, and a spokesperson declined to say whether prosecutors would seek extradition.

The actor has been repeatedly accused of sexual misconduct, including the sexual assault of two minors in the United States. One of his accusers was the actor Antoine Rapp, who exposed Spacey’s alleged misconduct in 2017, saying Spacey made sexual advances to her at a house party in 1986, when Rapp was just 14. (At the time, Spacey issued a statement apologize to Rapp, but claimed he had no recollection of the alleged interaction.) Since 2017, Spacey has been embroiled in alleged sexual misconduct lawsuits in the United States, including one accusing him of fondling an 18-year-old man at a restaurant in 2016 and accusing him of groping and attempting to kiss a massage therapist before offering him oral sex during a massage. Both lawsuits were eventually dropped.

After the accusations were made public, Spacey was ousted from the Netflix series Card castleand cut from Ridley Scottit is All the money in the world. The Oscar-winning actor is now set to return to his first project since exile from Hollywood, starring in 1242—West Gate, a historical drama from the Hungarian director Pierre Soos—one of a selection of unmade films seeking distribution at this year’s Cannes market. Principal photography for the film is set to begin in October 2022.
