The California Highway Patrol closed several lanes on the east side of the freeway near Hayvenhurst Avenue in Granada Hills.
Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes.
The fire broke out shortly before 9 p.m. At least one acre has been burned, officials say.
AIR7HD captured a resident pulling out a hose and watering a tree next to his house as flames burned in the street.
Despite 10 mph winds, dozens of firefighters were able to stop the progress of the Granada Hills Fire within an hour, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The agency also reported a second brush fire adjacent to Highway 118 and Reseda Boulevard in Porter Ranch. This fire broke out just after 8:30 p.m.
It took about an hour and 74 firefighters to stop the Porter Ranch Fire’s progress, LAFD said. No structure was damaged.
Officials do not currently believe the two fires are related.
Firefighters will remain at the scene of both fires to “continue containment and overhaul,” officials said.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fires is under investigation.
