Man shot dead in police lobby had attacked officers, agency says

WARWICK, RI (AP) — A 29-year-old man was fatally shot by police in the lobby of the Warwick Police Department on Friday after attacking officers with a knife, authorities said.

A group of officers were entering the hall after a briefing in an adjoining room when the man lunged at officers, punching one in the chest, according to a statement from Warwick Police. Four officers shot the man, who received medical help and was taken to a hospital in Rhode Island, police said.

The officer who was shot was wearing a bulletproof vest and was not injured, the agency said. The alleged assailant was in stable condition Friday evening.

The name of the suspect was not immediately released. All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending a review, the department said.

The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office is investigating with the Rhode Island State Police.

The department hall remains closed.
