Marvel is nearing the end of phase four

There were six films in the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There were six more in phase two. Phase three had 11 films.

Marvel is now in the middle of phase four. To date we have had five films – Black Widow, Shang Chi, Eternals, Spider-Man: No Coming Homeand Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — and seven TV series including Wanda Vision, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, What if…?, Hawk Eye, moon knightand the current broadcast Mrs. Marvel. And there are several more movies and shows on the way.

But where is this giant network of movies and shows going, and when will phase four hit its climax? No one outside of Marvel knows, and so far Marvel’s Kevin Feige isn’t talking. But Feige said phase four was already “nearly complete”.

In an interview with Total movie, Feige said that fans “will soon start to see where this next saga is going.” He added:

I think there have already been plenty of clues, at least apparent to me, about where this whole saga is headed. But we’ll be a little more direct about that in the coming months, to lay out a blueprint, so that audiences who want to see the bigger picture can see a tiny bit more of the roadmap.

Currently, Marvel has five confirmed titles that, unless plans change, are destined to be chapters of the MCU’s Phase Four: Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3and Wonders. And there are more shows too, including She-Hulk, Secret Invasion, Stone heartand Armor Wars. So “almost the end” of phase four could still be a long way off. Add up these films and series and you have dozens of hours of story to tell.

Of course, Marvel might eventually announce that some of these shows and movies are actually part of Phase Five, with one of the most important upcoming movies – like Quantumania, which will feature the return of Jonathan Majors’ time-travelling supervillain Kang, serving as a surprise conclusion to Phase Four. And basically how you categorize these “phases” at this point is ultimately pretty meaningless. Unless there is a major change, the different phases may end, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue for a long time.

The next Marvel movie, Thor: Love and Thunderhits theaters on July 8.
