More women should become federal ministers

Women are expected to be promoted to key posts in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s cabinet with Clare O’Neil and Jenny McAllister likely ministers.

Mr Albanese is waiting for the factions to decide who will be on his front bench, including the home affairs and environment portfolios, and the full bench can be sworn in on Wednesday.

The right is expected to nominate Ms O’Neil as a replacement for Kristina Keneally, while the left could nominate Ms McAllistar as a replacement for Terri Butler who lost her Griffith seat to the Greens.

The Queensland right are also expected to promote Anika Wells to replace Shayne Neumann in the ministry.

A decision to reduce the cabinet from 23 to 21 positions will also be taken.
