FIRST HOME

I bought my first investment property in my early twenties.

It was a three-bedroom house right next to my parents’ house in Pascoe Vale and I had to borrow the deposit, which was an incredibly scary proposition for a 20-year-old.

I bought it for $170,000 and haven’t done much to it other than renovating the bathroom and kitchen, as well as giving it a light paint job and a new carpet.

I turned it into a blank canvas, which I was sure would resonate with potential buyers. It must have worked because it was almost always rented and I sold it for $520,000.

CURRENT HOUSE

I am currently renting a modest three bedroom home while I finally build my dream home. I have five children under the age of nine and the youngest is two months old.

We are demolishing our old 1970s house and building on a 5,000 sqm block on the banks of the Maribyrnong River.

DREAM HOUSE

I’m building it now and it should be finished in 2023.

The ambience of the house is very much like a resort. It will be a fantastic place to retreat to after a hectic day, a real escape. But it will be warm, livable and relaxing for the wife and children.

Melbourne Cup Day 2021

There will be something for everyone: an indoor skate ramp and basketball court for the boys, a dance studio and ballet barre for my daughter, and a backyard vineyard to please my wife and a gallery of cars for me.

We had to keep revising the plans as the number of bedrooms required kept increasing – I went from three children to five over the planning period.

We keep some sentimental elements of the old structure of the family home, because there are very fond memories of when we first brought the children home from the hospital or spent lazy afternoons playing football in the backyard.
