Novak Djokovic granted vaccine exemption after obtaining Covid last month, lawyers say

Djokovic’s lawyers added that he obtained an “Australian travel declaration” because authorities told him that [he met] the requirements for an arrival without quarantine in Australia ”.

Djokovic, a vocal critic of compulsory vaccination, has never disclosed his own vaccination status. He is challenging the cancellation of his visa in Australian federal court in hopes of winning his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open, which begins on January 17.

The nine-time Australian Open winner will have to wait for a hearing on Monday to see if he will be allowed to enter the country to compete.

His lawyers said he was held mostly “incommunicado” for eight hours upon arrival in Australia, his lawyers said.

“This happened after he was on immigration clearance – mostly incommunicado – for about eight hours, until just before 8:00 am on January 6, 2022,” court documents submitted by his legal team.
