This 1880 alley house in Toronto was once the stables of the nearby fire hall

Although laneways are becoming more common in Toronto, most of them are newly built.

Their exterior often resembles a shipping container or a fancy box, while their interiors are sleek, modern, and minimalistic, which is great if you’re into that sort of thing.

But if you’re a fan of heritage, character homes, there aren’t many options on the market.

And yet, nestled next to a park and surrounded by a row of Victorian houses on the adjacent street is this unique alley house in Riverdale.

Originally built in 1880 as the stables of the nearby fire station, 1 Greig Avenue is an architecturally interesting and utterly unique home that even has its own zip code, real estate agent Kimme Myles tells blogTO.

“Even our prime minister can’t brag about it,” she joked.

The house was rebuilt and designed by Michelle Lloyd Berman and the late Christine Ralphs, with an odd helping hand from Canadian fashion designer Alfred Sung.

The designers managed to retain some of the original attributes, while adding modern touches.

The result is a stunning little house with lots of charm, character and natural light.

“It has a bit of a French country vibe and is warm and inviting with a wood-burning fireplace,” Myles noted.

When you enter the house you are immediately in the dining room and the kitchen.

The kitchen is the most modern part of the house and was recently updated with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances.

The living room has high ceilings with large windows and opens to a spacious private courtyard through French doors.

French doors lead to the courtyard.

The yard is quaint and private. In fact, according to Myles, the whole house is quiet.

The shaded courtyard.

“It’s quiet with very few neighbors. Well, really, no neighbors! Children laughing and birds chirping are the sounds of the day,” she said.

And indeed, you will hear children laughing because there is a playground right next to it.

The second bedroom with ornate moldings.

The house is quite small, it is an alley after all, but it has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The bedrooms are up a spiral staircase that passes under a lighthouse-like turret with a dreamy sky-painted ceiling.

The master bedroom is airy and has an arched patio door leading out to a patio.

Myles also noted that the bathrooms have been recently renovated and there is more living space in the basement of the house.

There is also an additional bedroom in the basement which could easily become a home office.

The only downside is that there is no garage but there is room for two cars.
