Tsunami hits Tonga and US west coast on high alert after volcano erupts

Large waves hit the coast of the city of Suva in Fiji after an underwater volcanic eruption triggered a new tsunami warning in Tonga

Scared Tongans fled to higher ground on Saturday after a massive volcanic eruption sent tsunami waves crashing into the South Pacific island and triggering warnings as far away as the west coast of the United States.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the entire west coast of the United States – from the bottom of California to the tip of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska – while tsunami waves triggered “minor flooding” in Hawaii according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
